The Dolomites region of northern Italy offers the visitor a very unique blend of cultures. Prior to World War One, much of this region was part of Austria, known as South Tyrol. At the end of the war, when it was annexed by Italy it became known as Alto Adige in Italian. As a result it has come to offer the best of both cultures. Beautiful alpine, Austria inspired architecture and a very tasty fusion of cuisine. You can also count one more unique group, the Ladin people, an ancient culture that includes its own mythology and language.
